Most Climbers prefer Marangu Route because it is considered to be the easiest route on the mountain, given its steady slope and direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly difficult. Marangu route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeast. The route is, unfortunately, less scenic than the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path. It is also the most crowded route than any other route on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Each day of your trip is planned to give you amazing adventures and relaxing moments. You’ll explore beautiful places, see incredible wildlife, and experience local culture. Get ready to make great memories!
Our 6 days at Kilimanjaro Climbing begin with an early morning drive through Kilimanjaro’s semi-tropical foothills to Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. At the gate, the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA).
The hiking trail begins by ascending a beautiful, tropical rainforest. At the upper edge of the forest line, we have the opportunity to see blue monkeys. During this section of the hike, you should expect rain, mud, and fog. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut.
Following breakfast, hikers will begin their ascent out of the rainforest and into the heather moorland. Hikers will pass the Maundi Crater and can climb up to its rim for a spectacular view of the Kibo Crater. In the moorland, you will spot exotic plants, including giant lobelia and groundsel.
After 6 hours of hiking, you will reach Horombo Hut (3720m). Horombo Hut sleeps 120 hikers and is located on a small plateau. Similar to the first night, the porters will prepare drinking and washing water for you. You will enjoy evening snacks and then dinner prepared by our chef. Be prepared for a cold night as temperatures drop below freezing at this site.
At Horombo Hut, you will spend the day allowing your body to acclimate to high altitudes. You will have the option of doing a day hike to Mawenzi Hut (4600m) for further acclimatization with your guide. Breakfast and dinner will be at the hut and lunch will either be packed or at the hut depending on your preference for the day.
Upon the completion of your breakfast, with your boxed lunch you will depart the Lodge and take a final exploration of the amazing Serengeti National Park. After your morning safari drive, we will head towards the Ngorongoro National park with a game en route at the Ngorongoro conservation area.
Later evening, you will arrive at the edge of the amazing Ngorongoro crater where you will find your over-night destination at the crater rim
Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks.
At Gilman’s point (18,600 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After spending a few moments taking in the plains of Africa and your accomplishment, we descend to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
This is the last day of our 6 days on Kilimanjaro climbing the Marangu route, we have a long trek mostly downhill through the tropical rainforest. Once at the park headquarters at Marangu gate, we collect our summit certificates. A vehicle will meet us here and drive us back to the hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
